[Bellefire] & Adele Rodgers - Race Prep for May Maiden Turf
This race was solely for maidens. Lily's first outing had been against some of the top two year old on the circuit this year, she'd held her own, but her inexperience had cost her the win. She was a handful to hold on the track, but Adele and the filly seemed to be minding each other as naturally as breathing....that didn't mean that bat bay filly didn't have a mind of her own...
Iron flints struck the turf as filly and rider galloped their work. The skies above where blue and the breeze was a warm one. Adele felt a bead of sweat roll down her back as the duo cantered about in their warm up. The filly was hot and heavy on her hands, eager and ready. With her first defeat, she was responding with fire. She had tasted the racing world and had become entranced by it.
Adele smiled at the filly's passion. It would come in handy on race day. So far, she was the only stalker, which would mean she'd have room to do her thing. Whipped Cream was the oldest horse in the field and had the most experience. She would be closing from the back, but if they ran this race right, Lily's natural talent and overly competitive drive would kick in with her signature closing kick. She became a mad house in the final stretch and it would take serious speed to sweep her. She was a War Admiral daughter. She was not to be slighted. It had happened once and that had been a huge learning curve. She'd run against Ode to Glory, Classic Nutcase and Nature's Dream...all top of the line juveniles...and she'd learned.
This was was now the time to apply the things that had been learned through the bitter pain of defeat...but she would now arise only stronger.
Adele eased her hand off the reins and Lily knew exactly what to do. Like a dark flame, she began to accelerate her stride, changing her lead like a pro to find her stride. She found her rhythm and Adele was simply along for the ride...
School was in session, but the test was looming...They had done their homework and would present a fierce force on the track. Whatever the outcome, the crowd would be guaranteed a good show.
